Meeting Newsletter May, 2018

Hello Friends, here’s info on several upcoming dates and events happening within our community at Westport Friends Meeting:

South Coast Pride Festival, Saturday, June 2, 2018, 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM at Buttonwood Park

At Monthly Meeting for Business on 5/13/18, Westport Friends approved joining with Allen’s Neck, Mattapoisett and New Bedford Meeting in having a presence at the South Coast PRIDE table on June 2, 2018 and donating $75.00 towards the fee for the table. We still need Friends from our Meeting who would be able to commit to being at the Quaker table for a two-hour shift during the festival. Please see their flyer HERE that explains in detail the highlights of the day’s events. This is a wonderful opportunity for our local Quaker Meetings to outreach to the LGBTQ community. If you are able to give two hours to this important event, and to be a Quaker presence at our table, please contact Gretchen Baker-Smith at 508-287-6441

Racial Dialogue Capacity-Building Workshop

Saturday, June 9, 2018 – 9:45am to 3:00pm at Wellesley Friends Meeting. No workshop fee. Child care and lunch are included. More info on the NEYM site here: https://neym.org/events/8090

Committee News and Updates:

A typical Fall Clean-up Day!

Book Fair Steering Committee: Books are arriving at a fast clip! If you have been trained to price, please consider spending some time in the Book Shed pricing and boxing books for our Annual Book Fair on July 7.

July 7: Book Fair! From 7 AM on. We need all hands on deck for our annual Book Fair. Please consider asking a family member or a friend to come along also to help for a few hours. We need people to haul books, load trucks, set books onto tables, etc. Please save the date! We will also need people to help throughout the week as well. Please speak with Greg Marsello and/or Gretchen Baker-Smith if you can commit to offering help on Saturday, July 7!

July 11 at 6:30 PM: A working group comprised of members of the Book Fair Steering, Property and Ministry and Counsel Committees will meet to consider a proposal to renovate our Book Shed and to possibly build an addition to store priced and boxed books throughout the year.

Property Committee: After discussing the need for new windows in the Community, this project was finally completed earlier this month! Melinda Foley-Marsello will oversee the selection of the type and style of shades to be installed professionally. The committee, and the Meeting as a whole, remains very grateful for the generous donation towards the cost of new windows by the Westport Gardeners Club!

Wish List: Many of use have multiple hand tools in our possession at home, sometimes more than we actually need! Property Committee would appreciate donations of the following hand tools, in good condition, that we would add to our existing and modest hand tool inventory:  tack hammer; regular hammer; Phillips screw driver; standard screw driver; pliers of any size and type; adjustable wrench (any size); level (any size); socket set; utility knife. Thanks for your consideration.
