Midweek Meeting for Worship, Wed, Nov 30, 7-8 PM

Just a brief notice that Westport Friends Meeting’s midweek meeting for worship will be held this coming Wednesday night, Nov 30, from 7-8 PM in the meetinghouse. All are welcome to join us.
We discovered at last week’s midweek worship that two new folks had heard about our midweek worship because others had passed the word along to them. So please feel encouraged to do the same even if it may not be possible for you to join us.

Seekers Group Meets next on Nov 28 at 7 PM

Hello Friends,

Our next Seekers Group meeting will be held on November 28, 2016 at 7 PM. All are welcome to join us.

Those who were at our last gathering had asked for a shorter reading before our next meeting.  We have chosen pages 43-47 from Parker Palmer’s book Healing the Heart of Democracy (Jossey-Bass, 2011) that outlines his idea of The 5 Habits of the Heart.  Although the book is about our political system, the 5 Habits apply to all sorts of groups, including this Seeker’s Group.  (Thank you, Randy for finding it.)  I will bring some printed copies to Westport Meeting on Sunday morning.

As always, this reading is a suggestion — if it’s useful, use it.  If not, don’t.  Either way, I hope that many of you will be able to join us on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7pm for our next gathering.  (Note we will not be meeting in December.)

I am holding all of you in much love and Light.  This circle is among the gifts in my life that I am especially grateful for.  Thank you for being part of it.

Gretchen Baker-Smith

Hello Friends,

Monthly Meeting Updates and Activities 10.17.16

Our Monthly Meeting for Business will be held this Sunday the 23rd at 8:30 in the Meeting House. Please send me any items for the agenda from your committees.

On Sunday, October 30, we will be having our Fall Clean-up after Meeting for Worship. The storm windows for the meeting house are a priority, along with other tasks for all ages and abilities. The meeting traditionally sponsors a pizza lunch for all the workers! There will be a posting of jobs that can be done on an individual basis, at your convenience, if you are unable to attend.

During lunch, M&C will sponsor a discussion with Friends about how they envision our Macomber Community House hall, representing us to the wider outside community.

On Sunday, November 6, we have two events planned, our first Family Worship of the season and a Welcoming Pot Luck Luncheon.

Family worship will be under the care of the Religious Education Committee. There will be a youth focused message during the time the children are with us. The children will leave for First Day School at 10:40.

At the rise of meeting, we will be having a Welcoming Pot Luck Lunch for our new members, Pamela Drouin, Eric Palmieri and Lily Palmieri. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have some friendly time together as a worship community! Please bring a food dish to share. We’re hoping for a crowd 😉

Our meeting will be hosting the Junior Yearly Meeting Retreat, from Friday eve, November 18-Sunday, November 20.

Our committees have resumed meeting with their newly nominated members. Clerks for the various committees are; Property- Jay Vieira, Finance- Greg Marsello, Ministry and Counsel- Kevin Lee and Hospitality- Gorman Riley.

Copies of the Nominating Slate for 2016/17 will be available on the front vestibule table in the Meeting House and on our website.

Lastly, I’m pleased to report that our transition from a Property Coordinator to shared property upkeep by specific individuals and our committees is working well!  We are dealing with concerns as they arise and, of course, there is a big learning curve. Please share any observations or concerns you may have with Betty Ann Lee, Liaison, who will in turn, communicate with the relevant committee or person concerned. We appreciate your input!

Most Gratefully,
Betty Ann Lee, Clerk

Next Seekers Group Meeting is April 4, 2016 at 7 PM!

Hello, All,

Our next Seekers Group meeting will be on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 7pm in the Community House.  I hope many of you can join us.

Also, there will be a special Seekers Group conversation on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 11:30-1:30in the Community House on Worship in the Manner of Friends.  We’ll share lunch (bring your own or something to share) and consider “What are all those people doing with their eyes shut?”   We may have some other Friends from Westport Meeting who aren’t able to get to our evenings conversations join this one.

Meeting for worship takes patience and a real leap of faith – but for some of us it becomes as necessary as breathing.  For others, especially newcomers, it is a mystery and challenge.  Why do you come to worship?  How does it feed you?  How do you center?  What do you do when your mind just won’t stop?  Do you have physical sensations when you’ve been given a message to speak?  How do you discern whether or not it’s a message for the entire group or just a new startling insight for you personally?  Do you have a story about a transforming moment that has happened in Worship?

It is understandable why Friends have a really hard time putting all of this into words, but it is so helpful to share our wisdom and struggles.  More than just a tutorial on the theology of Friends form of worship (though we can talk about that), the hope is that this will be an opportunity for sharing our wisdom and struggles while sitting in unprogrammed meetings.

For those who are interested, here are a few links to readings online that you might check out before this conversation (but there is no requirement to do so):
