Meeting Newsletter Aug-Sept 2014

Announcements:

Friends are asked to hold Lee and Stuart MacGregor and their family in prayer. Lee’s mom, Nancy St. George, passed away on July 24, 2014, following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth on August 23 at 1:00 PM. Condolences may be sent to Lee and Stuart at their home address which is in the Meeting Directory.

The 2014 Book Fair is now over and it was a GREAT SUCCESS. Meeting Newsletter pics-3
We had great weather, and that, combined with lots of hard work (throughout the year) and many people having tons of fun, made the day successful once again. Business was brisk all week too with over 20,000 books being sold. Add in the food, Buddy’s Stuff and donations and we met our $20,000 goal!

We will soon be sorting, boxing and slowly filling up the Book Shed for the 2015 Book Fair! Thanks again to all of Westport Friends Meeting and the surrounding community who helped to make our Book Fair a success.  – Greg Marsello

Public demonstration: “Stand Out In Support of Refugee (Immigrant) Children,” sponsored by the Alliance for Immigration Justice and the Brewster Unitarian Church. Saturday, August 2, 11.00AM-1:00PM, at the Orleans Rotary, Cape Cod.

MONTHLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Property Coordinator Report: Friends are encouraged to read Gretchen’s reports, which give a thorough review of what’s going on with our Meeting property and her sense of things in her role as our Property Coordinator.

Property Coordinator Report 6.5.14

Ministry and Counsel: At our June business meeting, Ministry and Counsel submitted their final draft of a memorial minute for our beloved Frank Lepreau who died in 2012 at the age of ninety-nine. After the reading and with a deep sense of Frank’s long and extraordinary life, the draft was approved as read. Friends may read the Memorial Minute for Frank Lepreau here.

Also at our June business meeting, Ministry and Counsel presented their final draft of the 2013 State of Society. Friends present reviewed and approved the document, which may be read here.

Book Fair: Greg reported that proceeds from this year’s Book Fair were excellent and we met our budgeting goal! (See Greg’s announcement above.) We had fewer books than in previous years and yet we made more money. The Book Fair began on July 12 and ran through the following week, ending on July 20. Meeting Newsletter pics-6

Nominating Committee: The committee presented its recommended slate for the coming year. After a period of discussion and a few changes made, the slate for 2014-15 was approved. The clerk reminded Friends that committee assignments begin in September and that care should be taken to make sure that newly appointed committee members are aware of upcoming meeting dates. The slate is available on our Web site here.

Seekers Group: The Seekers Group is a small circle of members and attenders who gather for worship, conversation, and mutual spiritual nurturing.  Our meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m. usually on the last Wednesday of the month in the Community House. For information about topics covered visit the Seekers Group page on our site and/or contact Gretchen Baker-Smith. Next Seekers Group Meeting is August 25 and the topic is “Spiritual Envy–Does Size Matter?”
