Seekers Group Summary 12.4.17

Hope is the bird that feels the light
and sings while the dawn is still dark.
– Rabindranorth Tagore

We are deeply troubled by many of the messages, decisions, and actions of our government and fellow citizens.  Some days, the intolerance, suspicion, and greed almost overwhelm us, and it is a challenge not to sink into despair.  Holding onto hope can be a spiritual discipline.  It seems vitally important to spend time with people who inspire us, whether by the specific work that they do or by the heart and integrity with which they live and breathe.  We are compelled to do something, whether through words, actions, prayers, or breath, that affirms our beliefs in justice, non-violence, peace, equality, and care for all of life.  Letting the Light we have experienced within us shine through is a faithful witness to what we as Friends have come to know of that of God in the stillness of worship together.  We appreciated the heart balm of this evening’s laughter, homemade cookies, and sweet oranges.  We are more grateful than ever for each other and for the hope that rises amongst us, helping us to continue to sing – and shine – despite the darkness.

Our next gathering will be Monday, January 8, 2018 at 7pm in the Community House.  All are welcome to join us.

Much Love,

Gretchen

Seekers Group Upcoming Programs

The next regular gathering of the Seekers Group will be on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 7pm in the Community House.

There will be a special Seekers Group conversation on Sunday, February 5, 2017 from 11:30 – 1:30 in the Community House on Friends’ Meeting for Business.   We’ll share lunch (bring your own or something to share).  It is suggested that Friends consider reading Pendle Hill Pamphlet #307, Beyond Consensus: Salvaging Sense of the Meeting by Barry Morley for that conversation.  Ministry & Counsel approved purchasing copies of it for those who would like one.  There are some available in the foyer of the Meeting House.  Be in touch if you need additional copies.  If child care is needed so you can join us, please let me know!

All are welcome to join us!

Seekers Group Meets next on Nov 28 at 7 PM

Hello Friends,

Our next Seekers Group meeting will be held on November 28, 2016 at 7 PM. All are welcome to join us.

Those who were at our last gathering had asked for a shorter reading before our next meeting.  We have chosen pages 43-47 from Parker Palmer’s book Healing the Heart of Democracy (Jossey-Bass, 2011) that outlines his idea of The 5 Habits of the Heart.  Although the book is about our political system, the 5 Habits apply to all sorts of groups, including this Seeker’s Group.  (Thank you, Randy for finding it.)  I will bring some printed copies to Westport Meeting on Sunday morning.

As always, this reading is a suggestion — if it’s useful, use it.  If not, don’t.  Either way, I hope that many of you will be able to join us on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7pm for our next gathering.  (Note we will not be meeting in December.)

I am holding all of you in much love and Light.  This circle is among the gifts in my life that I am especially grateful for.  Thank you for being part of it.

Next Seekers Group Meeting is April 4, 2016 at 7 PM!

Hello, All,

Our next Seekers Group meeting will be on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 7pm in the Community House.  I hope many of you can join us.

Also, there will be a special Seekers Group conversation on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 11:30-1:30in the Community House on Worship in the Manner of Friends.  We’ll share lunch (bring your own or something to share) and consider “What are all those people doing with their eyes shut?”   We may have some other Friends from Westport Meeting who aren’t able to get to our evenings conversations join this one.

Meeting for worship takes patience and a real leap of faith – but for some of us it becomes as necessary as breathing.  For others, especially newcomers, it is a mystery and challenge.  Why do you come to worship?  How does it feed you?  How do you center?  What do you do when your mind just won’t stop?  Do you have physical sensations when you’ve been given a message to speak?  How do you discern whether or not it’s a message for the entire group or just a new startling insight for you personally?  Do you have a story about a transforming moment that has happened in Worship?

It is understandable why Friends have a really hard time putting all of this into words, but it is so helpful to share our wisdom and struggles.  More than just a tutorial on the theology of Friends form of worship (though we can talk about that), the hope is that this will be an opportunity for sharing our wisdom and struggles while sitting in unprogrammed meetings.

For those who are interested, here are a few links to readings online that you might check out before this conversation (but there is no requirement to do so):

Next Seekers Group is Monday, Dec 7 at 7 PM

Our next Seekers Group conversation is on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 7pm in the Community House.  Our topic is “Sharing our spiritual journeys with significant people in our lives.”  Please bring your favorite story, querie, relevant struggle or wisdom – your own or that of someone else’s — to share with the group.  I’ve looked far and wide for “just the right readings” and have decided that all of us are the wisdom that we need going into this gathering.  I’m very much looking forward to our time together.  Hope you can join us.

Gretchen
